A safer and more comfortable corridor for people walking, riding and driving.
We are planning improvements to a 700-metre section of Leitchs Road South in Albany Creek to address long‑standing community concerns about vehicle speeds and create a safer, more comfortable corridor for people walking, riding and driving.
Leitchs Road South is an important link in our city’s active transport network. It connects Albany Creek and Brendale and provides access to the South Pine Sports Complex, Strathpine Train Station and Strathpine Centre shopping complex.
The Leitchs Road South Improvement Project focuses on a 700-m section between Albany Creek Road and Gaskill Court (North of Gaskill Court is being considered for upgrade as part of a future project). It aims to reduce speeding along Leitchs Road South, while also strengthening safety and connectivity for people walking and cycling.

Why it's important
In late 2024, we ran a four‑week community consultation on proposed walking and cycling improvements along a 1.5km section of Leitchs Road South, from Albany Creek Road through to the Leitchs Crossing pathway over the South Pine River. The consultation sought to understand local needs, priorities and preferences for safer and more accessible walking and cycling options.
Feedback showed strong community support for improved active transport facilities:
- 80% of you strongly supported improved cycling and walking infrastructure
- 70% said you would walk or ride more often with safer paths and crossings
- Many supported adding separated bike lanes, even is this required removing on‑street parking.
More information about this consultation is available at: moretonbay.link/leitchs-road-south-walking-and-cycling-upgrade.
We have also received reports from the community about speeding along this section of Leitchs Road South. These concerns, together with community aspirations for safer active transport connections, have informed the draft concept plan.
The draft concept plan
We have carefully considered what the community has told us - your safety concerns, your day‑to‑day experiences using Leitchs Road South, and your aspirations for better walking and cycling connections in the area. The draft concept plan reflects this feedback.
What's proposed
To improve safety and comfort for all road users, the draft concept plan focuses on a 700-m section of road between Albany Creek Road and Gaskill Court and includes:
- fully separated bike lanes on both sides of the road. The protected bike lanes would sit between the kerb and the on‑street parking bays, using parked vehicles as a buffer from traffic. Placing the bike lanes on the inside of the parking bays reduces the risk of vehicle occupants opening their door into the path of an oncoming pedestrian or cyclist by at least 40%. The staggered arrangement of parking bays will also help slow traffic by creating a more winding and narrower road alignment.
- alternating on-street parking to help create a calmer, slower traffic environment
- on-road bin collection, with bins placed at the road edge rather than on the verge
- reduced parking (approximately 60% fewer spaces) to accommodate safer cycling facilities.
Benefits for the community
- a calmer, more predictable street environment
- safer, more comfortable cycling with fully separated bike lanes
- clearer separation between people walking, riding and driving
- a more continuous active transport link between Albany Creek and Brendale.
We know that on‑street parking is important to many residents. That’s why we want to be upfront; the road corridor is narrow and it simply isn’t possible to deliver both separated bike lanes and retain all existing parking. To achieve the improvements the community has asked for, around 60% of on‑street parking would need to be removed.
We understand changes to parking and the street environment can affect day-to-day routines for some residents. That’s exactly why we’re seeking your feedback now. We want to understand if the safety and connectivity benefits are valued enough by the community to justify this level of parking removal.
