A safer and more comfortable corridor for people walking, riding and driving.

Leitchs Road South is an important link in our city’s active transport network. It connects Albany Creek and Brendale and provides access to the South Pine Sports Complex, Strathpine Train Station and Strathpine Centre shopping complex.

We are planning improvements to a 700-metre section of Leitchs Road South in Albany Creek to enhance safety, comfort and connectivity for people walking, riding and driving. The project focuses on the section between Albany Creek Road and Gaskill Court. It aims to address speeding while strengthening walking and cycling connections. Upgrades north of Gaskill Court are being considered as part of a future project.

In late 2024, we consulted the community on proposed walking and cycling improvements along Leitchs Road South. Feedback showed strong support for improved active transport facilities. We have also received community reports about speeding along this section of Leitchs Road South.

These findings informed a draft concept plan, which included:

  • fully separated bike lanes on both sides of the road
  • alternating on-street parking to help calm traffic
  • on-road bin collection rather than bins being placed on the verge
  • about 60% fewer parking spaces to accommodate safer cycling facilities.

Engagement snapshot

Between 30 April and 28 May 2026, we invited community feedback on the draft concept plan. We heard from over 140 people during the consultation period.

Generally, we heard:

  • concern about losing on‑street parking, especially multi‑car households, shift workers, carers and disability support providers
  • speeding is an issue and traffic calming is wanted
  • cycling demand is low, existing creekside paths meet need and dedicated bike lanes aren’t wanted
  • the project should prioritise Leitchs Road South north of Gaskill Court through to and including Leitchs Crossing
  • support workers, therapists and residents with mobility needs are concerned about losing safe access to their driveways if parking is reduced
  • a minority support safer cycling infrastructure, especially for young riders and connections to sports facilities. However, many questioned the need to reduce parking over alternate improvement options.

Thank you to all community members who participated. The project team is now reviewing your feedback and considering the next steps for the project. You can read the full summary of what we heard during the consultation period in the Community Engagement Summary Report here.
