Planning for a safer and more comfortable corridor

Council is planning improvements to a 700-metre section of Leitchs Road South in Albany Creek to address long‑standing community concerns about vehicle speeds and create a safer, more comfortable corridor for people walking, riding and driving.

Leitchs Road South is an important link in our city’s active transport network. It connects Albany Creek and Brendale for people walking and cycling and provides access to the South Pine Sports Complex, Strathpine Train Station and Strathpine Centre shopping complex.

The Leitchs Road South Improvement Project focuses on the section between Albany Creek Road and Gaskill Court. It aims to reduce speeding along Leitchs Road South, while also strengthening safety and connectivity for people walking and cycling.

Leitchs Road South Improvement - Project

Why it's important

In late 2024, Council carried out a four‑week community consultation on proposed active transport improvements along a 1.5km section of Leitchs Road South, from Albany Creek Road through to the Leitchs Crossing pathway over the South Pine River. The consultation sought to understand local needs, priorities and preferences for safer and more accessible walking and cycling options.

Feedback showed very strong community support for improvements - 80% of respondents strongly supported upgrades to cycling and walking infrastructure, and more than 70% said they would walk, roll or ride more often if safer footpaths, bike paths and crossings were provided. The community also expressed solid support for adding separated bike lanes, including a willingness to remove on‑street parking to make space for safer cycling infrastructure.

More information about this consultation is available at: moretonbay.link/leitchs-road-south-walking-and-cycling-upgrade.

In addition to formal consultation, Council has received several reports from the community about speeding along this section of Leitchs Road South. These concerns, combined with earlier feedback, have reinforced the need for traffic-calming measures and improved walking and cycling infrastructure along the corrido.

The draft concept design

We have carefully considered what the community has told us - your safety concerns, your day‑to‑day experiences using Leitchs Road South, and your aspirations for better walking and cycling connections in the area. The draft concept design reflects this feedback.

To create a safer, more comfortable experience for everyone, the design introduces fully separated bike lanes along the 700m project length from Albany Creek Road to Gaskill Court. Protected bike lanes are proposed between the kerb and the on‑street parking using parked vehicles as a protective barrier between moving traffic and people riding in the bike lane. The staggered arrangement of parking bays will also help slow traffic by creating a more winding and narrower road alignment.

We know that on‑street parking is also important to many residents. That’s why we want to be upfront: because the road corridor is narrow, it simply isn’t possible to deliver both separated bike lanes and retain all existing parking. To achieve the safety and cycling improvements the community has asked for, around 60% of on‑street parking would need to be removed.

We understand the proposed design may be a significant change for some residents. That’s exactly why we’re seeking your feedback now - to understand whether the safety and connectivity benefits are valued enough by the community to justify this level of parking removal.
