A more walkable and rideable city

We know from Moreton Says that you want to be able to get between places by walking, rolling or riding. You have also told us better quality and more accessible footpaths would encourage you to do this more. So, we are improving active transport connections across the city including along Leitchs Road South.

Planning for a more connected and direct route

Leitchs Road South is a key link in our city’s active transport network. It connects the communities of Albany Creek and Brendale, and provides access to the South Pine Sports Complex. We are planning to upgrade the cycling and walking route along Leitchs Road South, including Leitchs Crossing pathway over the South Pine River. The upgrade aims to provide a safer, more connected and more direct route for people who walk, roll or ride in the area.

This link is also a high priority route on the Queensland Government’s principal cycle network. It is being delivered in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads through the Cycle Network Local Government Grants program.

Community Consultation

Between 10 September and 8 October2024, we invited community feedback on the Leitchs Road South Cycling and Walking Upgrade.

Thank you to those who shared their views with us. The feedback you provided will be considered for further planning.

A summary outlining what we heard during the engagement can be downloaded here.

Q&A

The Leitchs Crossing fish passage enables native fish to migrate up and down the South Pine River. It provides access to essential habitats for spawning, feeding and sheltering and helps keep the fish population healthy and sustainable. Any improvements to the Crossing will maintain the fish passage. This element of the project will be worked through with key stakeholders as part of the detailed design process

We’re asking for your input at the start of the project so it can inform our planning and design development.

What you tell us will be considered alongside other matters including, but not limited to, accessibility, community impacts, environmental impacts such as flooding, cost and economic benefits.

Planning is currently underway and will be followed by design development. Subsequent stages including construction will be subject to Council’s annual budget process and prioritisation against other needs across the city.

We will keep you informed as the project progresses and of any future opportunities to have your say. Register for project updates by clicking the +Follow button at the top of this webpage.
