Local Laws deal with a range of matters that impact the liveability of our communities including:

• Signs
• Animal keeping and control
• Bathing reserves
• Camping
• Alterations to public land
• Cemeteries
• Commercial activities and businesses on public land
• Recreational activities on public land
• Driveways
• Awnings
• Fires and fire pits
• Gatherings and events
• Local annoyances and hazards (e.g. overgrown allotments)
• Parking
• Temporary homes
• Vehicles on public land
• Verge gardens
• Waste management

City of Moreton Bay made new local laws in 2023. Council proposes amendments to:

• ensure local laws align with recent changes to State legislation
• respond to opportunities for operational improvements
• address drafting issues that have become apparent since commencement of the new local laws.

The Local Government Act 2009 limits the powers of local governments to make certain local laws. Local governments cannot make local laws that contain provisions:

• with penalties of more than 850 penalty units (currently $113,580)
• that stop a local law being amended or repealed in the future
• about a prohibited subject (i.e. network connections, specific types and distribution or placement of election advertising or development processes)
• that are anti-competitive (unless the local government has complied with the prescribed procedure for review of the anti-competitive provision)
• that are inconsistent with State law.

Council will consider all the submissions made during the public consultation period and then, decide, by resolution, whether to proceed with making the proposed Amendment Local Law and Amendment Subordinate Local Law as advertised, or with amendments, or not to proceed.

Notice of the adoption of new Local Laws will be published in the Gazette and on Council’s website in accordance with the Local Government Act 2009. The documents will also be made available for inspection and purchase at Customer Service Centres in the City.
