Help name the new White Patch bridge — we want your ideas!

City of Moreton Bay is inviting the community to help name the new bridge to White Patch. This is your chance to contribute a name that reflects the local area’s identity, values, and aspirations—leaving a lasting mark on history!

City of Moreton Bay is trialling a new method to name major assets like bridges. This process won’t apply to all naming decisions.

About the new bridge

During the 2022 floods, the causeway connecting the White Patch community to the rest of Bribie Island was washed away, leaving the area isolated for four days. In September 2024, a new two-lane bridge was completed and reopened to the public. This $8.9 million project, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), was delivered by the City of Moreton Bay.

The new bridge has been raised to a higher elevation, significantly enhancing flood resilience at the Wrights Creek crossing. Additionally, it features improved accessibility for locals, with a new approach road that connects to shared pathways and includes the rehabilitation of vegetation disturbed by the flooding.

The importance of names

Council values the social and cultural significance of naming assets. Names foster a sense of belonging, preserve heritage, aid wayfinding, and strengthen connections to Country.

All naming decisions align with Council’s values, ethical principles, and community standards, ensuring they reflect both local identity and broader community expectations. Naming helps create meaningful spaces by:

  • identifying landmarks within the community
  • supporting wayfinding for locals, visitors, and emergency services
  • enhancing community identity and belonging
  • preserving and celebrating the cultural and heritage values of the area.

How Council will choose a name

City of Moreton Bay is trialling a new method to name major assets like bridges. This process won’t apply to all naming decisions.
  • Step 1 - Suggestions

Community members suggest names and prefered themes.

  • Step 2 - Review

Council officers will identify prefered themes and remove names that do not comply with the naming criterion.

  • Step 3 - Shortlist

The naming panel will choose a name from the preferred themes. They will also choose 2 alternative names as backups.

  • Step 4 - Endorsement

The chosen name or one of the backups is endorsed in a Council meeting.

  • Step 5 - Community feedback

The proposed name will be published, and the community will have 28 days to provide comment.

  • Step 6 - Adoption

If the community supports the proposed new bridge name, it will be adopted. If the community does not support the proposed name, the Council will consider further.
