Community feedback in November 2023 told Council the rich history of the Glasshouse Precinct that lies within the Samford Parklands is highly valued. It also indicated a strong community desire to acknowledge and share this history as the precinct is revitalised to enable community and economic benefits.

Examples of how the past may be acknowledged include:

  • incorporating design elements, building forms and materials that reflect the precinct’s historical uses
  • adaptively reusing elements of the former glasshouse structures in a future facility and/or its associated landscaping
  • installing interpretative and wayfinding signage that highlights the history.

Gathering the site’s history

We understand the uses of the Samford Glasshouse Precinct have changed over time.

In 1850s what is now the Samford Glasshouse Precinct was part of the first pastoral lease established in the area. In the early 1950s a CSIRO research station was established on the site. In the late 1990s CSIRO operations ceased. In the early 2000s the then Pine Rivers Shire Council acquired the land and transition to the Samford Parklands commenced.

We want to gather more information that tells the stories of the place and the people involved. If you, or your family, have documents or photographs that do this, or if you know stories about the past, we would love to hear from you!

Council will also be inviting the assistance of local community groups, including the Samford Museum.

The material you provide will be verified by our Local Histories team before being:

  • safely stored and made publicly available on Council’s digital portal, Our Story
  • used to help inform how the precinct’s history is acknowledge on the site as the revitalisation progresses.

It may also be reproduced fully or in part and made available at the site, for example, on interpretive signage.
