Leading the way in inclusive play

We know from Moreton Says that our communities values inclusive facilities and diversity. We want to continue creating fully accessible spaces for play and recreation.

The Liberty Swing in Pelican Park, Clontarf has been providing high-value recreational play for people with severe and profound disabilities for decades.

Due to its age and deterioration, the Liberty Swing is being replaced with a more accessible and inclusive swing in Crockatt Park, Woody Point.

When the Liberty Swing was installed, it was at the forefront of accessible play equipment. Since then, there have been significant advancements in the design of accessible and inclusive playground equipment that gives people with disability the opportunity to play alongside other playground users.

A swing for all-abilities, to be enjoyed with others

To improve accessibility and increase usage, we are proposing to install a We-Go-Swing at Crockatt Park. It will be alongside other existing play equipment and closer to public amenities, facilities and cafes (just 1.8km from the current location).

Being able to roll up the ramp onto the large entry deck of the We-Go-Swing eliminates the need to transfer from a mobility device to enjoy the experience. There is plenty of space for users to swing with a friend, parent or carer.

Unlike the Liberty Swing, the We-Go-Swing does not require a specialised key to use it. If users of the Liberty Swing don’t own their own MLAK key they'll need to borrow one from Council’s customer service centre between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

A new location to improve accessibility

We’ve thought about the best location for the new swing so it can be best enjoyed by users. We think Crockatt Park, Woody Point is the right spot for it.

The park already has great facilities, including:

  • a well-equipped playground with flying fox
  • convenient location with better access to nearby shops and cafes
  • accessible toilets
  • sheltered picnic tables
  • closer to the Woody Point Jetty and the changing places facility at the Redcliffe Library.

Have your say

We are inviting feedback on the proposed swing alternative and location from people who use the Liberty Swing as well as their friends, families, support workers and organisations advocating for people with disability.

Consultation is open until 4pm Thursday 10 October.
