Better Council decisions mean better results for our communities

We all want a better future for ourselves, our families and our communities.

Moreton Says is our city-wide program that brings the views of our communities into our planning and decision-making. It is a series of surveys that help us understand and keep track of the things that matter most to our communities.

Since Moreton Says launched in 2021, we’ve learned a lot from what you have told us. We have been making better decisions and achieving better outcomes for everyone who lives, works and visits City of Moreton Bay.

We want to continue the conversation and your views are important.

Information for educators

Completing the survey

While we generally say the survey takes approximately 12 minutes to complete, I would recommend teachers allow for 20 minutes for students.

City of Moreton Bay legal team has confirmed that parental consent is not required for students aged 15 and older to participate. We have provided a tailored version of the online survey that does not collect any personal information, such as names, email addresses, or phone numbers.

Students can access this version of the survey by visiting moretonbay.link/ms-schools

Supporting activities

To complement the survey, we created some optional activities that touch on three core learning points:

  1. How local government serves the community
  2. The role of community engagement and role in Council decision-making
  3. The importance of young people’s participation in Moreton Says to inform decisions

These activities would be best run before completing the survey as they’ll provide students with some context as to why we would like them to get involved.

  1. Card matching functions to correct level of government: This activity asks students to sort key functions e.g., education, police, health, waste services into the correct tier of government. This activity has been designed to demonstrate what services and programs Council is responsible for. This will take 10 minutes to complete.
  2. Put a finger down if - How students use council services: Through this activity, students are asked to raise one hand and put a finger down if they have used various Council services in past week e.g Have you visited a local park? Have you put rubbish in the bin? This activity will take 2 -3 minutes to complete.
  3. Understanding the community values of the class: Through a simple voting activity, students can share what values are most important to them. The teacher can compare the class's response to recent Moreton Says data to see if they align or differ. This activity will highlight the importance of young people participating in engagement activities like Moreton Says. We expect it will take 10 minutes to complete.
