A multi-phased project

The Suttons Beach Public Space Project is a multi-phased project. See a breakdown of the project steps and timeframes.

Interim work to return the park to public use

Council is committed to enabling locals and visitors to make the most of Suttons Beach Park while planning is being done for a new building.

This phase of the project will see the current building structures removed and a grassy area reinstated for interim use by the public.

To achieve this, we have obtained approval to demolish the existing Suttons Beach Pavilion building. You can read more about this approval via Council's online DA Tracker (Number: DA/2023/2933).

Council will:

  • use an appropriate construction methodology to maintain stability of the Marine Parade embankment to ensure public safety
  • salvage bricks from the original pavilion building, where it is practical and reasonable to do so
  • demolish the existing Pavilion buildings and reinstate grassy areas for public use until construction of the new building commences
  • maintain the demountable public amenities and existing rotunda structure until construction of the new building commences.

Planning for the future

Council is aware that the significance of Suttons Beach and its park extends to the social connections the community hold to this location. Our planning for the future of the site will carefully consider how these connections can be maintained.

An important part of the future of the site will be the construction of a new Pavilion building with community-focused access and uses.

Concept designs for the new Pavilion building will be developed through the architectural design competition that is currently underway.

Plans for the future of the site will ensure good value for the use of public funds. So, Council will also consider:

  • feedback from the community on the site and how it could be used in the future (stakeholder engagement and consultation completed in 2022)
  • feedback from the community on preferred building style (consultation completed in 2023)
  • expert built form and landscaping design advice
  • current and projected future park usage patterns
  • master planning for the park
  • potential foreshore activations.

While all of these activities are underway, we are continuing to advocate for additional funding from sources outside of Council.
